Frequently asked questions
Am I Eligible for Free Hearing Aids in Australia?
In Australia, free hearing aids are available to eligible individuals under the Australian Government’s Hearing Services Program. This includes pensioners, veterans, and young people under 26 with specific hearing needs. Some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over 50 and members of the Defence Force may also qualify. Eligibility criteria can vary, so it’s best to check with the program or our audiologist to see if you qualify.
Can I Get a Private Health Fund Rebate for Hearing Aids in Australia?
Yes, many private health funds in Australia provide reimbursements for hearing aids under their Extras cover. The amount covered varies by insurer and policy. Typically, reimbursements are subject to limits, waiting periods (usually 12 months), and claim frequencies (e.g., every 3 years). Check your health fund policy or speak to your insurer for specific details about your coverage.
Do I need a referral for hearing test?
You don’t need a referral to book an appointment at Harmonic Hearing—you can schedule a visit directly without seeing a GP first. However, if you have a referral from your doctor or specialist, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate. Bringing your referral can also help our audiologists gain a better understanding of your hearing health history.

What are the signs of hearing loss for my child?
Signs of hearing loss in children can vary but often include not responding to sounds or voices, especially when they can’t see the speaker. Other indicators include delayed speech development, frequently asking for repetition, difficulty following directions, or speaking louder than usual. Socially, you might notice that your child struggles to engage in conversations, particularly in noisy environments. If you observe any of these signs, it’s important to schedule a hearing assessment to ensure your child’s hearing health is on track.

We had a fantastic experience with Jay and the team at Harmonic Hearing. Everyone we interacted with was lovely and professional - they couldn’t do enough for us. Our audiologist, Jay, supported us through the hearing assessment of our 2yo. He had a wonderful way of keeping the assessment engaging and his feedback on the results was clear and easy to understand. We actually look forward to the next assessment!

Lovely people and excellent service at Harmonic Hearing! My 3 year old daughter is usually nervous around doctors but she had such a great time during her hearing test. The audiologist was incredibly friendly and welcoming, turning the test into a fun activity for her. After the visit, she said she wanted to go back to play again! Thank you so much for the attentive care and making our child’s hearing test such a great experience.
